FiOS Customer Discovers Verizon Censoring Emails with Hyperlinks

By on November 9, 2015

On October 27, a Verizon FiOS customer sent an email including a link to one of his clients and later received a message from Verizon indicating that his message “did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.”

The customer contacted Verizon FiOS customer service via chat to resolve the issue, and was informed that Verizon had established a practice of auto-rejecting any personal or business emails sent by its FiOS customers that contained a hyperlink, classifying such emails as “SPAM.”

In addition, the customer also learned that Verizon did not permit its customers to opt out of its SPAM email scanning procedure.  Online bloggers and various media have reported that this practice amounts to censorship and possible privacy violations.
