FTC Announces that Dog Waste Bags Claims of Biodegradable and Compostable May Be False

By on February 3, 2015

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) examined the environmental “green” claims of 20 dog waste bag sellers and found instances of deceptive advertising regarding the products’ biodegradability and compostability.

“Consumers looking to buy environmentally friendly products should not have to guess whether the claims made are accurate,” said Jessica Rich, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.  “It is therefore critical for the FTC to ensure that these claims are not misleading, to protect both consumers and honest competitors.”

Consequently, the FTC sent letters warning all 20 of the companies that their “biodegradable,” “compostable,” and other environmental claims may be deceptive along with guidance on how to comply with truth-in-advertising principles.
