How do class action lawyers get paid?

By on January 8, 2013

In the majority of class action lawsuits, members of the class are represented by lawyers who take on the case on a contingency fee basis.   This payment method means attorneys do not charge an upfront fee and only get paid for their services if the lawsuit results in a recovery for class members.  If a recovery is determined through a settlement or trial verdict, the court must support a request for payment of reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses sustained in association with the lawsuit.
