Sony Cyber-Attack Leaks Employee SSN, DOB and Salary Data

By on December 5, 2014

The data breach of Sony Pictures Entertainment resulted in the disclosure of personal data for thousands of Sony employees along with leaking five movies including “Annie,” “The Interview” and “Fury,” prior to their release in theaters.

The source of the breach was not yet confirmed though Hacker group #GOP or “Guardians of Peace” claimed credit for the cyber-attack and rumors link North Korea as payback for “The Interview,” a movie produced by Sony in which the CIA recruits two Americans journalists to kill North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un.

The leaked employee data includes dates of birth, salaries and Social Security numbers and is being investigated by the FBI and cybersecurity firm Mandiant.  The Sony breach follows in the wake other significant corporate data breaches during the past 12 months including JP Morgan, Home Depot, and Target.
