Yahoo’s “500 Million Users Hacked” is Nothing — According to Insider It Was Twice That

By on October 24, 2016

According to news sources, a former Yahoo executive thinks the number of user accounts that were hacked is one to three billion, not the 500 million that Yahoo reported.

According to the former insider, Yahoo has one main database to authenticate users, and Yahoo has 700 million to 1 billion active accounts, plus many more inactive accounts.  Many people have multiple email accounts.

Yahoo was a tech pioneer that gained email accounts early in the internet revolution. After Google launched its free gmail services, many pioneer email providers, like Yahoo and Microsoft’s Hotmail, lost active users to gmail.

Accordingly, the former Yahoo executive was at a loss to explain how the number of hacked accounts was only 500 million.
